Egypt is witnessing a wide debate about the future of the “TikTok” application in the country, amid calls to ban it by some activists and media professionals.
Media professional Sherif Madkour called for banning the application, pointing to its potential negative effects on Egyptian identity and youth. These calls come after rumors spread about the possibility of banning “TikTok” starting next October.
In response to these calls, IT experts denied the possibility of banning the application in Egypt, stressing that “TikTok” does not pose a threat to national security as happened in other countries such as India and Australia. The experts explained that issues related to national security are not sufficient justification for banning the application at the present time.
On the other hand, Ahmed Badawi, head of the Communications and Information Technology Committee in the House of Representatives, confirmed that the National Telecom Regulatory Authority responded to the committee’s recommendations regarding the approval of new controls to regulate “TikTok” content.
Badawi added that the committee is working to develop new mechanisms to monitor content on the application to ensure its commitment to Egyptian values and constants, without the need to take full ban measures.
He pointed out that there are ongoing efforts to implement new laws to monitor pages that publish content that is considered to be contrary to societal values, and to provide purposeful content that is in line with the norms of Egyptian society.
