Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit denounced the Ethiopia-Somaliland agreement, describing it as a “blatant coup” against Arab and African constants, while Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that Ethiopia has become a source of turmoil in the region.

This came during an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers held online Wednesday, where Aboul Gheit stressed in his speech the rejection of “any agreements or memoranda of understanding that violate or violate the sovereignty of the Somali state.”

Somaliland signed a memorandum of understanding on January 1 under which Ethiopia will be granted the right to use a 20-kilometre waterfront for 50 years through a lease agreement.

Somaliland is a former British protectorate that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized by the international community.

The agreement serves the interest of Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country, especially since it lost its sea access following Eritrea’s independence in 1993.
