The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Egypt denied the validity of rumors circulating on social media regarding gender segregation in universities at the beginning of the next academic year.
Ministry spokesman, Adel Abdel Ghaffar, confirmed that these rumors are “pure fiction and baseless.”
Abdel Ghaffar added that “separating male and female students in studying at the university is absolutely out of the question,” noting that these rumors “recur from time to time in almost the same form.”
Circulating publications mentioned claims that the plan to “prevent mixing” would be carried out by dividing the six days of the week equally between males and females.
The rumors reminded public opinion of what happened in 2022, when similar news spread after two murders committed by university students, including the killing of student Naira Ashraf at the hands of her colleague in front of Mansoura University.
The authorities then completely denied the validity of these rumors, stressing that there had been no change in education policies. The Ministry called on everyone to obtain information from its official sources and stay away from rumors that might raise anxiety and tension between students and their families.
