The Egyptian national team achieved a difficult victory against its guest, Burkina Faso, with two goals to one, in the match that was held at the “Cairo International Stadium” in the third round of the first group competitions for the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The Egyptian team started the match strongly, scoring two goals in the first eight minutes of the first half, and Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a wonderful header after a cross pass from team captain Mohamed Salah, the English Liverpool star.
Trezeguet returned to double the score in the eighth minute with a powerful left-footed shot from inside the penalty area, after dribbling a Burkina Faso defender.
The Burkinabe national team returned to reduce the deficit in the second half, as Lassina Traoré scored his team’s only goal in the 57th minute, but their attempts to equalize the result failed.
The Egyptian national team topped the first group with this victory with 9 points, while the Burkina Faso national team fell to third place with 4 points.
Within the same group, the match between Guinea-Bissau and its guest, Ethiopia, ended in a goalless draw, with the host team getting the fifth point and occupying second place, while the Ethiopian team collected two points to remain in fifth place.
Egypt and Burkina Faso met with strong competition on several occasions, most notably the 2017 African Cup of Nations semi-final match, which ended with Egypt winning on penalties after the two teams tied in regular time. Burkina Faso is also considered one of the strong teams in Africa, which makes the upcoming confrontation a major challenge for the Egyptian team.
