A child was killed, and two women were injured in the collapse of a 5-storey building in the city of Mit Ghamr in Dakahlia Governorate on Tuesday.
Sources in the governorate indicated that the collapse occurred on Prophet Daniel Street, as a result of a furniture transport winch that was being used by a resident collided with the property.
The accident resulted in the death of a 14-year-old child, and two women were injured and taken to Mit Ghamr Hospital to receive treatment, while the body of the deceased child was handed over to his family.
The Governor of Dakahlia, Ayman Mukhtar, ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the causes of the collapse of the property, and to submit a detailed report within 48 hours.
The governor also directed that financial compensation be provided to the families of the deceased and injured, and that a temporary shelter camp be prepared for the families affected by the accident.
Rescue teams continue to search for survivors under the rubble of the collapsed property, as estimates indicate that there are people trapped.
Sources in the governorate suggested that the building’s age and lack of regular maintenance were the cause of the collapse, in addition to the use of a winch to move furniture, which led to increased pressure on the building.
The governorate called on citizens to report any old or dilapidated properties, and to take the necessary measures to avoid similar incidents.
Another collapse occurred in a five-story residential building in the capital, Cairo, in June 2023, killing nine people and injuring another person.
