Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi revealed his country’s ambitions for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, expecting to harvest between 6 and 10 medals.
In statements on the sidelines of a ceremony held by the Egyptian Embassy in France for the Olympic mission, Sobhi confirmed providing all the capabilities for athletes to qualify and compete in the Olympics.
The Egyptian minister indicated that his country is participating this year with the largest mission in the history of Egypt’s Olympic participation, as it includes 148 male and female athletes, in addition to 16 reserve players, competing in 22 different sports.
Sobhi revealed his country’s plans to reach 15 medals in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, stressing the work of the sports and technical staff to achieve this goal.
These statements come at a time when Egypt is seeking to strengthen its position on the global sports map, as it previously won 7 medals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, including a historic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling.
In a related context, a responsible source in the Egyptian Olympic Committee confirmed that the Egyptian mission received unprecedented support during the preparation period, including external training camps and accurate medical follow-up. The source added that the main bet is on individual sports, in which Egypt achieved most of its previous Olympic achievements.
Egypt’s participation in the Olympic Games began since the first session held in Athens in 1896, where only one Egyptian player participated in the gymnastics competitions, and Egyptian athletes won many Olympic medals in various sports, including boxing, weightlifting and wrestling.
Egypt witnessed the emergence of many Olympic stars such as Ihab Abdel Rahman, Fathia Ahmed and Feryal Ashraf, and boxing was considered one of the most prominent sports in which Egypt achieved great achievements, and many Egyptian boxers won Olympic medals.
Egyptian weightlifters also won many Olympic medals and are considered among the most prominent competitors in this sport at the global level.
