Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, during a press conference with his French counterpart Stéphane Sigournet in Cairo on Sunday, called for the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a time frame for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Shoukry said during the meeting: “We stressed the importance of the ceasefire in Gaza and the entry of aid to the Strip,” and added: “We affirm Egypt’s rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.”

Shoukry continued: “The Palestinian issue must be dealt with within a comprehensive political framework, and a time frame must be set for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”

For his part, Sigourne said during the conference: “We emphasize the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip,” and continued: “We are concerned about the increase in tensions in the Red Sea region.”

Segurne stressed his country’s keenness to coordinate visions and efforts with Egypt towards a permanent ceasefire and prisoner exchange, in light of the agreement of the two countries’ positions on the need to prevent the circle of conflict from expanding, and to activate the two-state solution as a basis for a comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue and the restoration of security and stability in the Middle East.
