Cairo and N’Djamena announced their agreement on the need to support regional initiatives to end conflicts in Sudan and enhance stability in Libya during talks held by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby in the New Alamein City.

The Egyptian President hosted his Chadian counterpart in an expanded discussion session; which touched on bilateral cooperation and security issues, including the urgent need to address humanitarian crises and stop the escalation of violence in the region.

During the meeting, El-Sisi stressed the historical relations between Egypt and Chad, noting Egypt’s commitment to supporting Chad in various development fields such as energy, infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, and security, in addition to combating terrorism.

The two sides stressed the importance of joint cooperation to enhance security in the Sahel region and confront ongoing terrorist threats.

Egypt and Chad have diplomatic relations dating back to 1960 after Chad’s independence. During the 1980s and 1990s, there were mutual visits between Egyptian and Chadian leaders, especially under Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Chadian President Hissène Habré. After Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi took power in 2014, relations witnessed momentum, as El-Sisi received Chadian President Idriss Deby on several occasions, and they discussed issues such as regional security, counterterrorism, and economic development.
