Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution decided on Thursday to imprison 10 political activists for 15 days for participating in a pro-Gaza rally.
Nabih El-Genadi, a human rights lawyer with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) and a member of the detainees’ defense team, said that authorities arrested all the activists accused in the case from their homes on Thursday morning.
Al-Janadi reported that the activists appeared before the State Security Prosecution and were charged with “belonging to a banned group and spreading false news and information,” in a new case that adds to the series of arrests that began on October 20 related to supporting Gaza.
The authorities documented the demonstration with audio and video, followed by the prosecution of a number of activists in their homes after the rally ended.
Several journalists and political activists staged a protest in front of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate building on Wednesday, carrying only bread and water, to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The protesters chanted slogans accusing Arab rulers of cowardice and treason and demanded the closure of the Israeli embassy in Egypt and the expulsion of its ambassador from Cairo.
The demonstrators also demanded the release of detainees for their participation in the protests that erupted on the seventh of October last year in Gaza.
