Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has sent an urgent appeal to the European Union and its member states, urging them to abandon their financial and material support to the Dabaiba government’s coastguard in Libya.
The call came as a result of what the organization described as “cruel violations and practices” against migrants and refugees in the country.
The organization’s search and rescue representative, Juan Matías Gil, expressed grave concern about the escalation of violence and violations against migrants and refugees in Libya, including the forced return of people to the country.
Mathias noted that the MSF team witnessed two incidents over the past weekend involving the EU-funded Libyan coastguard.
The representative stressed that these incidents have deliberately endangered the lives of migrants and refugees, calling on the European Union to stop its support for such cruel practices.
It is noteworthy that the organization has long called for improving the conditions of migrants and refugees in Libya and guaranteeing their human rights and considers the continued support of the European Union to the Libyan Coast Guard as part of the reinforcement and exacerbation of these violations, according to the organization’s statement.
