The President of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, has sent a special envoy to Port Sudan, reflecting ongoing efforts to persuade the Sudanese leadership to reconsider its recent decision to suspend its membership in the organization.
On the first of February, the President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, received a written message from the President of Djibouti, conveyed by the Special Envoy, as part of efforts to resolve the dispute between the two countries.
In statements to the media, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, revealed that the letter urges the Sudanese leadership to reconsider the decision to suspend its membership in the intergovernmental body.
Youssef affirmed Djibouti’s commitment to promoting regional stability, stressing the neutral role played by the Commission in facilitating peace processes inside Sudan.
On 20 January, Sudan suspended its membership in IGAD in protest at its override of its decision to refrain from interfering in internal affairs, its insistence on considering the RSF on an equal footing with the Sudanese army and recognizing its commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).
