Director of Geophysics at the National Institute of Meteorology, Khair El-Din Atafi confirms in an interview broadcast on Radio Mosaïque+ that the recurrence of earthquakes in Tunisia is normal.
Atafi explained: “The issue of recurrence of tremors in Tunisia is a normal matter, as the main driver of tremors lies in the presence of active faults, without plate boundaries. These faults appear either on the surface or deep in the ground, resulting in some mild tremors.”
He pointed out that, from a geological standpoint, Tunisia is not a “preferred place” for repeated earthquakes to occur in a short period of time, compared to countries such as Japan and Indonesia, as these countries are linked by plate boundaries and are the main driver of earthquakes of varying strength.
The seismic stations of the National Institute of Meteorology in Tunisia recorded an earthquake last Tuesday, at 12:31 local time, with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale, and the epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Sidi Bou Said in the state of Tunisia, where it was felt. It has residents of the area.
