In light of widespread popular anger, the head of the Libyan Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, affirmed his government’s determination and commitment to eliminate fuel subsidies and replace them with cash support, in the middle or end of this year.
Dabaiba said during his participation in a session at the World Government Summit hosted by Dubai, that the price of fuel in Libya is one of the cheapest in the world because of the support provided by the state since the discovery of oil, pointing out that this matter has been exploited to smuggle more than 60% of fuel to neighboring countries and European countries close to Libya, with an estimated loss of 60 billion dinars annually from the state budget.
Dabaiba had issued a decision last month to cancel fuel subsidies, which are estimated to cost about 4 billion dinars annually from the state budget, but he was subjected to great criticism and faced popular protests, which prompted him to retreat and open wide discussions about it.
