Hundreds of people demonstrated in the streets of the capital, Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso, to demand that the French embassy be moved away from the presidential headquarters.
In response to the call of the “National Coordination of Citizen Monitoring Associations” coalition, hundreds gathered near the presidential security system, behind which the French embassy is located.
The presidential security guard refused to allow the demonstration to be held nearby, due to the many sessions scheduled to be held at the presidential headquarters.
After insistence, the demonstrators were dispersed, but after negotiations they obtained permission from presidential security, where a delegation from the coalition, accompanied by the presidential guard, went to the embassy. Officials gave the embassy a month to move away from the presidential headquarters.
In turn, the head of the African Leaders Movement, Amadi Maiga, announced that “if the embassy rejects their request, we refuse to bear any responsibility for what will happen to it.”
It is noteworthy that relations between Burkina Faso and France, its former colony, became tense following two military coups last year, resulting from the failure of the authorities to protect civilians from the militants who are active in the north of the country.
