The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) announced that it had asked its Algerian ambassador for clarification on the visit of Algerian Army Chief of Staff General Said Chengriha to Rwanda, a country where it is united by a raging conflict.

According to a statement by the Congolese Foreign Ministry, published on the “X” platform, the Algerian ambassador in Kinshasa, Mohamed Yazid Bouzid, was received by the deputy prime minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Francophonie in the Congo, Christophe Lotto.

The Congolese Foreign Ministry said the meeting was an opportunity to obtain clarifications on the visit of the Algerian army chief of staff to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, on February 20th.

The Foreign Ministry said the meeting was an opportunity to obtain clarifications on the nature of this visit and the expected objectives of it.

In a related context, the statement of the Algerian Ministry of Defense indicated that the visit comes after a previous visit by the Chief of Staff of the Rwandan Army, General Mubarak Muganga, to Algeria in 2022.

The statement stressed that the meetings focused on strengthening bilateral military cooperation and ways to enhance it in the future, in line with the aspirations of the leaderships of the two countries to expand areas of coordination in fields of common interest.

Shangriha praised the importance of the visit as a step to strengthen bilateral relations and consolidate military cooperation.

Muganga stressed the readiness of the Rwandan Defence Forces to benefit from the capabilities and experience of the Algerian army in the field of defence.

This comes in the context of the current tensions between Congo and Rwanda, with Congo accusing Rwanda of supporting rebel movements in North Kivu, while Rwanda denies these accusations.
