At least one bomb exploded at Goma airport, the center of the North Kivu region in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, on Saturday amid ongoing battles in the area with rebels of the “M23” movement.

A source in the local administration confirmed that “Goma airport was hit by a bomb on Saturday night around 2:00 local time (midnight GMT),” according to AFP.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, spoke about two bombs that hit the airport, noting that they did not cause damage, and said “there are experts at the site to verify the source of the fire.”

Since the end of 2021, North Kivu has been witnessing a military conflict between the M23 movement, supported by Rwandan army units, on the one hand, and the Congolese army, supported by armed groups and two foreign military companies, on the other.
