The head of Libya’s interim national unity government, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, rejected the idea of leaving office except through a legislative and presidential election process, amid the circulation of proposals to form a unified government to lead the country towards the election stage.

In an interview with Lebanese journalist Tony Khalifa during the Tripoli Government Communication Forum, Dabaiba said: “I will not leave the chair except for those who deserve it, and the people who decide it, and we seek elections.”

The head of the interim unity government stressed the need to hold elections according to fair laws, stressing that he will leave office after the elections are held and a new authority is chosen.

Dabaiba said that he “does not mind the candidacy of anyone for the presidency of the country who meets the conditions such as Saif Gaddafi or others,” stressing that he “does not have the decision to run for elections.”

“The chair is changing, and no one will stay on it forever. It’s true that the chair has its appeal, but I’ll leave it.”

Dabaiba stressed his readiness to accept the participation of an international election monitoring committee, in response to accusations that he was disrupting the election process and noted: “We want to go to the elections, and let the Libyan people choose.”

The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, stressed last week that “the existence of two governments is not in the interest of Libya or the international community,” calling for a mini government to hold elections for no more than 8 months.
