South African writer Zukiswa Waner and Egyptian artist Mohamed Abla have returned their awards to Germany to protest its support for the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
Wanner said , who in 2020 became the first African woman to receive a medal awarded by the ‘Goethe-Institut” for services to disseminate German language and culture and support cultural cooperation, said she would send her back to Germany because she could not tolerate Germany’s inhumane attitude towards Gaza’s citizens.
Egyptian artist Mohamed Abla condemned the German position biased towards Israel in the genocidal war it is carrying out against the Palestinians in Gaza, and Abla decided to return the Goethe Medal, which he had received in 2022, and was the first Arab to receive that medal.
