Abdel Hakim Shelmani , President of the Libyan Football Federation, surprised the Libyan sports community with an unexpected decision, as he announced that the date of the General Assembly meeting would be brought forward from next December to August 24.
This change comes after several postponements witnessed by the meeting, as it was first scheduled to be held in May, then postponed to June, then rescheduled again to December, before being brought forward to the current date of August.
This step came in light of the increasing pressures facing Al-Shelmani and his team from clubs demanding early elections, as the clubs are looking forward to the departure of the current council headed by Al-Shelmani before the end of its legal term in April 2025.
According to Al-Shelmani’s decision, the meeting will be held in the city of Sirte, which is about 450 kilometers east of the capital, Tripoli, and during the meeting the electoral regulations of the federation will be discussed and approved, the elections committee and the electoral appeals committee will be elected, in addition to determining the date and location of the next elections.
The General Assembly of the Clubs has broad powers, including withdrawing confidence from the current president, which happened previously in December 2018 when confidence was withdrawn from the former president Jamal Al-Jaafari and Al-Shelmani was appointed in his place.
Some believe that the time has come to make radical changes in the leadership of the Federation, and to appoint new sports figures capable of transforming Libyan football.
