Former NATO political planner Fabrice Pottier says senior NATO officials are concerned about the possibility of former US President Donald Trump winning the 2024 US election, as they fear Trump will be serious this time about the US leaving the alliance.
Pottier noted that the NATO leadership fears that Trump will return determined to retaliate, while stressing that there is a fear that the actual US withdrawal from NATO will take place and described this scenario as “doomsday for NATO.”
The US authorities have blocked Trump’s proposal during his presidency, but Pottier believes that Trump may return this time in earnest, while stressing that there is a fear that the idea will turn into action.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed confidence that the United States would remain a member of the alliance regardless of the results of the US elections.
Former NATO commander James Stavridis cited major concerns in Europe about the possibility of a de facto U.S. withdrawal from NATO if Trump wins a second term.
It is worth noting that the next US presidential election is scheduled for November 2024, with several Republican Party figures vying for the nomination, including Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
