Public transport vehicles were subjected to serious acts of vandalism following a match between ‘Chabab Belouizdad’ and ‘USM’ Alger in the semi-finals of the Algerian Cup.
Clashes broke out between fans of ‘Chabab Belouizdad’ and USM Algiers, smashing more than 17 buses belonging to the Urban and Semi-Urban Transport Corporation.
The riot took place in front of the Nelson Mandela Stadium, which sparked widespread condemnation in social and sporting circles, and was followed by calls for deterrent sanctions against those involved.
The match ended with the victory of “Chabab Belouizdad” on penalties, and witnessed escalating tensions among the fans, manifested in skirmishes and stone-throwing, culminating in acts of vandalism that affected buses designated for transporting fans.
The affected foundation issued a statement condemning the hostilities, noting that the affected buses were intended to facilitate the access of fans to and from the stadium.
The damage was documented in a video posted by the foundation on its official page, sparking a wave of anger and condemnation on social media platforms.
The public expressed their disappointment at the recurrence of such events that hinder the progress of sport in the country, while stressing the need to maintain order and safety at sporting events.
