In a speech marking the 64th anniversary of Chad’s independence, the President of Chad, General Mahamat Idriss Déby, declared his firm commitment to combating widespread corruption at all levels.
Déby stressed in his speech that the government has received strict instructions to implement a “zero tolerance” policy towards any form of corruption, including the embezzlement of public funds.
This announcement comes amid the establishment by the transitional authorities in Chad of an independent anti-corruption body in August 2024, and the approval of a set of laws and legal procedures to enhance these efforts.
It is worth noting that Chad celebrates its Independence Day on August 11 of each year, the day on which it gained independence from French colonialism in 1960, when François Tombalbaye was the first president of the republic.
Mahamat Idriss Déby took power in 2021 after the killing of his father, Idriss Déby Itno, in clashes with rebels.
