Chad’s main opposition candidate and Prime Minister Succès Masra has called on US billionaire Elon Musk to provide satellite internet to his people.
The request comes amid fears that service could be interrupted if General Mohamed Déby is defeated in the upcoming election.
Chadian opposition leaders have been critical of the delay in announcing the results of the partial and interim presidential elections.
The election commission justifies the failure to publish the results so far by the vast size of the country, difficulties in transportation and the road network, most of which are out of service.
Former Justice Minister Ahmed Mohamed Hassan warned of the risk of Chad sliding into a conflict over election results that could lead to fighting, with the prominent Chadian politician and academic calling on political leaders to show restraint and calm.
As for Masra’s position, he has so far remained silent, in compliance with the electoral law, which prohibits candidates from announcing results before they officially appear in the public media.
