An explosion occurred at a hotel near a police station in northeastern Kenya, where official authorities announced that the explosion resulted in the death of a civilian and 3 police officers, in addition to a number of injuries.
According to Mandera police chief Samuel Mutonga, the explosion in Mandera town was caused by an explosive device planted in the hotel that was detonated while people were gathering for breakfast.
Mutonga confirmed that two of the injured were in critical condition, as they would be flown to the capital Nairobi for treatment.
Al-Shabaab is responsible for the attack on the hotel, according to investigators, as the group considers it a constant threat in the region, after carrying out several attacks in Kenya and Somalia.
The incident follows another attack in Kenya’s coastal Lamu county, where a police reservist was killed.
During a police operation in Garissa district, materials for making improvised explosive devices and a weapon of war were found, and three people fled during the raid.
The attacks come as the Kenyan government delays reopening the border with Somalia due to terrorist attacks.
