The Sudanese Teachers Committee’s campaign to end the war through peaceful negotiations gained wide popular momentum, a few hours after its launch at noon yesterday, Saturday.
More than 40 political parties, trade unions, and civil society organizations joined the campaign, increasing its influence and strength in Sudanese society.
Opinion polls on social media platforms showed that more than 90% of participants support the call for negotiations in Switzerland in mid-August.
The Rapid Support Forces accepted the American invitation a few hours after it was presented, while the army’s position remains unclear.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is studying the invitation, reflecting the state of hesitation within the government.
Many Sudanese saw the proposed negotiations as a “last chance” to stop the destruction and major deterioration that Sudan has been exposed to since the war began in mid-April 2023, despite some dissenting voices.
In a related context, the United Arab Emirates denied reports that pictures of Emirati passports were found in the wreckage of a military vehicle belonging to the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan.
A statement by the UAE’s UN envoy explained that 5 of the six passports belong to a delegation from the international charity organization headquartered in the UAE, which has been operating in Sudan since May 2022. The statement added that no images of the other parts of the six passports were provided to prove the allegations.
