The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced that the draw for the preliminary round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be held on Tuesday (February 20th) in Cairo, and that it has tentatively settled on the proposed date for the tournament to be held in Morocco.
CAF said in a statement, through its official website, that the draw will be held on Tuesday (February 20), in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, noting that the preliminary round will be with the participation of the 8 teams ranked lowest in the classification of “FIFA”, namely: Somalia, Djibouti, Sao Tome, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia and Eswatini.
The round-robin matches will be played between 18 and 26 March 2024, and the four qualifiers in the preliminary round will join the 44 teams that were exempted to participate in the qualifying group stage.
A source in the CAF Competitions Committee revealed a preliminary agreement with the Moroccan Federation to hold the tournament in the summer of 2025, specifically in July and August.
The source confirmed that the date was agreed under the auspices of the International Federation (FIFA) after consultations that began several months ago and culminated during the establishment of the last edition of the tournament, which concluded this month in Ivory Coast, adding that the proposed date is currently from July 20 to August 16 or 17, 2025.
