Dozens were killed and wounded in a major attack on a mosque last Sunday in eastern Burkina Faso, local security sources said, the same day as another deadly church attack.

Gunmen attacked a mosque in Natiwani, killing dozens, the sources said. On the same day as the mosque attack, at least 15 people were killed by gunmen during a mass at a Catholic church in the northern Burkina Faso town of Ikasane.

The village of Ikasani, whose church was attacked, is located in the tri-border area of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, an area where armed groups are heavily active.

The three countries are suffering due to deteriorating security and repeated attacks by armed groups and have seen successive military coups since 2020.

Burkina Faso, in particular, has been witnessing deadly attacks since 2015 attributed to movements loyal to al-Qaeda and ISIS. It is estimated that the attacks killed some 20,000 people and displaced more than two million people from their homes.
