Italy is concerned about Russia’s plans to build a nuclear base in Libya on Europe’s southern flank.

Moscow will place nuclear submarines in a seaport in eastern Libya and is working to build it, significantly strengthening its influence in the Mediterranean vis-à-vis NATO countries.

The newspaper was based on discussions between Haftar and Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus Bey Yevkurov, who has visited Libya four times, about the opening of a Russian naval base in Tobruk, with priority given to submarines in the port.

The presence of submarines a few kilometers from NATO countries will not be beneficial to security, especially since expanding influence in Libya has been the desire of Russian President Vladimir Putin for 20 years.

The newspaper added that the other ports that Russia may use as a naval base are Sirte and Ras Lanuf, according to experts, excluded, a military base in Tobruk due to its proximity to the Republic of Egypt, which raises its concern and dissatisfaction, according to the newspaper.

As for Haftar’s relationship with Wagner, the newspaper says that the presence of between 800 to 900 Russian soldiers now in eastern Libya to help him manage the air defense system, further strengthens relations with Moscow, especially after it took command of the Wagner elements under the wing of the Ministry of Defense after the death of its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Libya is an ideal starting point for Russia in Africa, as it looks to bolster its military presence in Sudan and Mali, as well as possibly in Niger, Chad, and Burkina Faso, to meet its ambitions.
