Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that the “BRICS” group is seeking to launch an independent payment and remittance system based on digital currencies, as part of the abandonment of the dollar.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov recently confirmed that the (BRICS) group is moving towards creating a platform for the implementation of trade settlements between member states.

Siluanov said: “We are not referring to the fact that a single (BRICS )currency will be issued, we always say that the BRICS countries should promote trade among themselves, increase the welfare of their citizens, and raise the pace of growth of their economies, so the currency used in trade exchanges must be a stable and reliable currency by the countries of the group, and should not be used as a restriction tool by any party, so we call for the use of national currencies in trade between member states.”

“The group is looking at a proposal on creating a digital payment method in Russian rubles, Chinese yuan or UAE dirhams, to move away from the financial infrastructure of Western countries, the central banks of these countries and the payment system (SWIFT),” Siluanov said.

“The platform will initially be a tool for exchanging remittances to cover intra-regional trade, on the basis of which a clearing house for the countries of the group can be established,” Siluanov continued.

On Jan. 1, Russia became the (BRICS) chair for 2024, and the group was formed by Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, but recently 23 countries have already expressed interest in joining the economic alliance.
