Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina has revealed details of her harassment during the 2024 Paris Olympics, sparking widespread controversy over the Brazilian Olympic Committee’s handling of the incident.
Ana Carolina, 22, said she was removed from the team and sent home in a humiliating manner, forced to travel in inappropriate clothing after a night spent with her swimmer boyfriend Gabriel Santos.
Earlier, Ana posted a photo of herself and Gabriel enjoying the atmosphere in Paris, which angered the president of the Brazilian swimming team, Gustavo Otsuka, who stated that the purpose of being in Paris was to represent 200 million Brazilians and not to entertain.
The controversy escalated after Ana appeared crying in a video clip she posted on her “Instagram” account from Portugal, where she was waiting for her flight to Brazil.
The swimmer accused the Brazilian Olympic Committee in the video of ignoring her complaints about the harassment she was subjected to and not giving her the opportunity to collect her things before leaving the Olympic Village.
Ana Carolina Vieira specializes in freestyle and breaststroke swimming and participated in the 2020 Summer Olympics representing Brazil in the women’s 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, and has set records in swimming competitions, most notably breaking the South American record in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay during the 2018 Jose Finkel Championship.
It is worth noting that this incident is not the first in her swimming career, as she was previously involved in a fight with her teammate in a previous championship.
Brazil is participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics with a large sports delegation of 273 Brazilian athletes, including 153 female athletes, making it the first time that Brazil has sent a delegation in which women make up the majority, at 55% of the total.
