Bathily: May 2024 be the year the voices of the Libyan people are heard, demands honored, and aspirations fulfilled
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya and Head of UNSMIL, Abdoulaye Bathily renewed his call for Libyan leaders to “come together, engage in constructive dialogue and make the promise of elections a reality”.
This came in his congratulatory message on the advent of the new year, adding: “May 2024 be the year the voices of the Libyan people are heard, demands honored, and aspirations fulfilled”.
“The yearning for lasting peace, unity and prosperity resonates deeply in every Libyan heart,” Bathily said in his letter.
Bathily also renewed his call to Libyan leaders to prioritize the needs of their people above all else and for seizing the opportunity to reunite, build trust and pave the way for a brighter future for all Libyans.
At the end of November, Bathily launched a new initiative aimed at bringing the five main parties to the same negotiating table in order to overcome outstanding issues over the elections.
Batili hopes that during the upcoming meeting, Presidential Council leader Mohamed Menfi, Government of National Unity Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba, House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh, High Council of State leader Mohamed Takala, and Libyan Arab Armed Forces Commande Marshal Khalifa Haftar will be able to agree on the necessary steps to implement the political process.
