The Ecuadorian club Barcelona announced the death of its young goalkeeper, Justin Cornejo, aged 20.
Cornejo suffered a serious head injury as a result of falling in the bathroom, which led to him losing consciousness and being transferred to the hospital, where he remained in intensive care for 48 hours before his death was announced.
The Ecuadorian club explained that Cornejo suffered severe brain injuries that required stopping all sporting activities during his treatment period.
The club asked the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) to postpone its scheduled qualifying match against Brazilian Red Bull in the Copa Sudamericana, but the federation rejected the request.
