Joan Laporta, president of the Spanish club Barcelona, agreed to invite Ali Al-Sherif, president of the Libyan club Al-Hilal, to participate in a friendly match between Barcelona and the Libyan national team.
This friendly match comes on the occasion of the opening of Benghazi International Stadium after a long period of closure and maintenance.
According to the “winwin” network, Laporta agreed to the invitation during his meeting with Al-Sherif at the FC Barcelona headquarters, indicating the need to study the appropriate date for the match to fit the Catalan team’s match schedule for the new season.
The match was scheduled to be held at the beginning of next November, which is the date set by the Turkish company “Limak”, which is implementing the maintenance and development project for Benghazi International Stadium, to open the stadium with a capacity of 45,000 spectators.
The Turkish company resumed maintenance and development work after a 12-year hiatus, as it took over the project in 2009, but the unstable conditions in the country since 2011 hindered the completion of the work.
Barcelona previously played one friendly match against a Libyan team, as it faced the Libyan club Al-Ittihad at Camp Nou on April 3, 2003, and Barcelona won 5-0 at that time.
