Qatar qualified for the final of the AFC Asian Cup on home soil by defeating Iran 3-2 in Wednesday’s semi-final match.
The Iranian national team opened the scoring with an early goal through its star Sardar Azmoun in the 4th minute, but the Qatari team responded with two consecutive goals scored by Jassim Jaber and Akram Afif in the 17th and 43rd minutes, respectively, to end the first half leading (2-1).
In the second half, the Iranian team equalized with a goal by its captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh in the 51st minute from a penalty kick, but Almoez Ali tipped the balance of “Annabi” again by scoring the third goal in the 82nd minute.
The Iranian national team completed the match with ten players after the expulsion of its defender Shojaei Khalilzadeh in the fourth minute of stoppage time of the match (90 + 4).
The Qatari national team (defending champions) will meet in the final scheduled at Lusail World Cup Stadium on Saturday (February 10), with its Jordanian counterpart, who qualified for the Asian final for the first time in its history after defeating South Korea by two goals without reply.
It is the third time that the final will be purely Arab after the 1996 editions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and the 2007 edition between Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
