Iran qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, currently being held in Qatar, after defeating Syria in the round of 16 on penalties 5-3.
The original and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw, as Iran, who have 3 titles in the competition, scored through Mehdi Tarmi in the 34th minute from the penalty spot, before Omar Khreibin equalized for the Syrian national team in the 62nd minute from the penalty spot as well.
Iran was forced to play with ten players after the expulsion of its player Mehdi Tarmi in the 90th minute for receiving the second warning, but the Syrian national team players did not take advantage of the numerical shortage in the ranks of their rival, so the two teams resorted to penalties, which ultimately smiled at the Iranian team.
Iran set up a date next Saturday in the quarter-finals with Japan, who beat Bahrain 3-1 in the round of 16.
The winner of Iran and Japan will meet in the semi-finals with the winner of the other quarter-final match between Qatar and Uzbekistan.
