An Egyptian security source and Egyptian and Sudanese media reported that Egyptian authorities have arrested Sudanese businessman Abdel Basset Hamza, whom the United States accuses of funding Hamas.
According to the Egyptian source, who spoke to the BBC on condition of anonymity, Hamza was arrested in Cairo at dawn on Monday, January 15, and is being held in an unknown location and is being investigated.
No Egyptian authority has issued official statements regarding the circumstances and reasons for Hamza’s arrest, but accounts circulating in the press and social media about the reasons for his detention have varied.
Press reports said Hamza’s arrest was related to “confronting corruption and monitoring markets regarding his dealings in gold mining and trading in Egypt,” while other newspapers and social media influencers said his arrest was linked to “financing terrorism,” as the United States accuses him of providing funding to Hamas.
