The leak of the list of salaries for artists participating in the Carthage International Festival this summer angered Tunisians, given their significant increase in light of the public financial crisis and the unstable economic and social conditions that the country is experiencing.

Activists on social media criticized Magda Al-Roumi, Kazem Al-Saher, and Sherine for their high conditions, considering their wages to be imaginary and unjustified.

The head of the Artists Syndicate, Maher Al-Hamami, revealed in a media statement that Magda Al-Roumi asked for 325,000 dinars (about 100,000 dollars), while Sherine asked for 400,000 dinars (about 125,000 dollars), and Kazem Al-Saher 1.2 million dinars (about 380,000 dollars) in exchange for their revival. These wages aroused the ire of Tunisians on social media, criticizing what they described as excessive wages for artists, and holding the festival organizers responsible for paying these exorbitant amounts, especially in light of the difficult economic conditions, calling for a boycott of artists who demand high wages that are not commensurate with the state’s capabilities.

In this context, activist Mohamed Saidiya denounced in his blog post the amounts provided to some foreign artists in dollars, at a time when the state treasury is suffering from a severe shortage of hard currency, considering that it is a waste of public money and that the people are more deserving of this money.

In response to these criticisms, the Ministry of Culture, through the Minister-designate, Monsef Boukathir, denied the news circulating about allocating a huge budget to festivals to bring in artists at record wages, stressing that the Ministry will continue to support festivals within reasonable limits while ensuring financial balances.
