Egyptian geology teacher Maged Imam organized a huge private lesson at the Hassan Mostafa Gym in the 6th of October area, in which more than 4,000 high school students gathered.

The lesson was a final review in geology in preparation for the final exams, and clips of it were circulated on social media, where large crowds appeared and an enthusiastic reception for the teacher who entered to the tune of one of the famous songs.

The Egyptian authorities acted in response to this gathering, as the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, decided to refer the executive director of the hall and those responsible for organizing the event to investigation.

The ministry confirmed in an official statement that the event was organized without adhering to official legal regulations, and that the hall aimed to develop its resources by allowing private lessons, but without taking into account the required legal procedures.

Private lessons in Egypt are a common phenomenon, and the demand for them has increased significantly in recent years, and the authorities have been fighting and criminalizing private tutoring centers, or what is known as the educational “senator”, and in November 2022, the Minister of Education announced a proposal to legalize private tutoring centers, as the ministry is considering legalizing these centers to reduce the financial burden on Egyptian families, who spend about 47 billion pounds annually on private lessons.

Legally, private tutoring centers are prohibited by law, and legal action is taken against violators in coordination with the Ministry of Education, as these centers are closed, and reports are written against violators.
