A court in St. Petersburg uncovered a case of forgery after a young Egyptian man, Mostafa Mohamed Mostafa Ahmed, claimed to marry a Russian citizen to obtain a temporary residence permit.
The incident began with the Russian woman losing her passport in the summer of 2021, and six months later she discovered that she was legally registered as the wife of the Egyptian young man.
When the woman tried to register her first child with the Civil Status Department, she discovered the fraudulent marriage that had taken place using her lost passport.
The Russian woman filed a lawsuit to annul the marriage, and after investigation, the court annulled the marriage and ordered its registration to be deregistered from official records.
The case raised questions about security and verification procedures in civil status offices, especially after Mustafa submitted an application to the Russian Immigration Department, claiming that he wanted to live with his “wife.”
As of 2023, the residence system in Russia has witnessed some important changes, including reducing the duration of temporary residence to 90 days, and replacing all current immigration documents with the unified residence permit system. It is expected that this system will be fully implemented in 2025.
