Gunmen launched a horrific attack in Wase district of Plateau State in central Nigeria, killing at least 40 people and injuring others.
The local government’s media commissioner, Musa Ibrahim al-Shams, reported that the gunmen fired sporadically and burned a number of houses in the village of Zorak.
The attack took place in an area long plagued by land and mining disputes and sectarian violence.
Shafei Sambo, a local youth leader, said at least 42 people were killed in the militant raid on the area.
The plateau is a vital area for the mining industry, with resources such as zinc and lead, as well as tin mining, which the state is particularly famous for.
Plateau State sits on the line separating Nigeria’s Muslim-majority north and its predominantly Christian south, making it vulnerable to violence caused by conflicts between herders and farmers.
