The Secretary-General of the Algerian National Democratic Rally (RND), Mustapha Yahi, has called for the establishment of a new border crossing with Tunisia.
According to Yahi, the crossing allows the marketing of products from Algeria’s province of El Oued, which is famous for its abundant agricultural production, through the Tunisian port of Gabes, which is close to the region.
In a speech in the southeastern state of El Oued, Yahi explained that the people of the city of Souf in the state of El Oued made the exception and miracle in recent years when they were armed with the will and determination, and did not wait for the support of the state, and turned the region into a food basket for Algerians in a short time, as Wadi will contribute to a third of the national product of vegetables and fruits, and the first nationally in the production of potatoes.
The Algerian official stressed that farmers in the region and the whole country are raising the challenge every day in order to achieve food security, and they also contribute to strengthening the country’s financial capabilities in hard currency by exporting some of their products.
To support this group, Yahi called on the local authorities to overcome the difficulties and provide the necessary assistance to farmers in Wadi Souf and accompany them, through agricultural support, continuing to connect agricultural investments to electricity, and completing new agricultural paths, which are witnessing a significant shortage.
He also called on the public authorities to speed up the granting of licenses to transport organic fertilizers to the area, which remains an obstacle in potato cultivation.
In this context, he called on the public authorities to open a new border crossing with Tunisia in the border municipality of Douar El Maa, given its proximity to the border port of Gabes, where it will be an important economic seaport.
Desert agriculture in Algeria has become described as the future of the country due to the huge volume of production in which the wilaya of El Oued is a pioneer, and the Algerian desert is characterized by the availability of huge flat and reclaimable areas with the availability of groundwater infinitely.
According to the secretary-general of the National Democratic Rally (RND), a party participating in the government, there is a plan to send major investments in the Sahara in wheat cultivation to achieve the production of about 9 million tons of grain, and activate 42,000 agricultural investors in the Algerian Sahara, by placing about 170,000 hectares of desert land at the disposal of investors in the agricultural sector.
