The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced on Friday the appointment of American Stephanie Khoury as deputy UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batelli.
The appointment was announced via the X platform, where the mission provided details of Stephanie Khoury’s long experience in supporting political processes and mediation in the Middle East, as well as her experience working with the United Nations in Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
Prior to joining the United Nations, Khoury worked with several NGOs and obtained a PhD in jurisprudence and a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas, USA, and speaks both Arabic and English.
For its part, the mission referred to Khoury’s previous roles at the United Nations, including the position of Director of Political Affairs at the United Nations Integrated Transition Support Mission in Sudan in 2022, as well as the position of Chargé d’Affaires of the United Nations Integrated Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNMISS) 2021, a representative of the Office of the United Nations Special Adviser in Sana’a, Director of the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator in Beirut, and a representative of the United Nations Envoy to Syria.
