The Wall Street Journal suggested that Israel would carry out a complex military operation to regain control of the strategic border strip between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, which is called the “Philadelphia axis.”
The newspaper described the operation as “risky,” while Cairo warned Tel Aviv against any operations in the region and informed Washington of the same message.
Since withdrawing from the Gaza Strip nearly two decades ago, Israel has controlled all of the Palestinian Strip’s borders except the border area known as the Philadelphia Axis (Salah al-Din Road), on the southern border with Egypt, which is subject to a peace agreement signed between Cairo and Tel Aviv in 1979, amid “Egyptian concern” that a potential Israeli operation “could violate the terms of the peace treaty.”
Netanyahu said on Saturday that Israel had not yet made a decision on military control of the border strip between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to prevent the flow of weapons into Gaza.
According to Egyptian sources, Cairo warned Israel against carrying out any operations in the region, and that it conveyed the warnings to the US side as well.
