India has released a suspected “spy pigeon” who almost strained diplomatic relations between countries after being detained for 8 months.
The dove’s crisis began in May when it was caught near a port in Mumbai with two rings tied to its legs, with words sounding Chinese.
Police suspected the pigeon’s involvement in espionage, detained her and later sent her to an animal hospital in Mumbai. The pigeon turned out to be a racing bird in Taiwan, and fled and made its way to India. This is not the first time a bird has been suspected, as authorities in Indian-Kashmir released a pigeon owned by a Pakistani fisherman in 2020 after an investigation concluded that the bird that flew across the heavily armed border between the two nuclear-armed countries was not a spy. Another pigeon was caught after being found with a threatening message to the Indian prime minister in its foot. The border areas between Pakistan and India and between China and India also witness occasional tensions, with many border guards on all sides killed. Birds were used in World War I for espionage, and dolphins were used in intelligence operations during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and Western countries led by the United States.
