Algerian Sonatrach received a delegation from the Libyan National Oil Corporation from July 29 to 31, 2024, as part of deepening cooperation between the two parties in the energy sector.

According to a statement obtained by the specialized energy platform, officials and teams from Sonatrach and the Libyan National Oil Corporation met on July 29 to develop a detailed action plan to implement the provisions of the charter of agreement signed between the two parties.

This step comes after the CEO of the Sonatrach Group, Rachid Hachichi, and the Chairman of the Libyan National Oil Corporation, Farhat Ben Gueddara, signed in January 2024 an addendum to the charter of agreement signed in February 2022.

The cooperation aims to enhance work in the fields of drilling, geophysics, well-level intervention, stimulation, and construction.

It is noteworthy that Sonatrach announced in November 2023 the lifting of the force majeure on contractual areas in Libya and resumed its activities there in January 2024.

The areas of cooperation expanded to include exploration, development of oil and gas resources, renewable energy projects, and oil services, including geophysics, drilling, stimulation, construction, training and exchange of expertise.

A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the CEO of the Algerian National Oil Works Corporation and the Libyan National Oil Company to provide drilling and well intervention equipment, in addition to maintenance and training services. The Libyan Corporation delegation is scheduled to visit the research laboratory of the Algerian Petroleum Institute.

In a related context, Sonatrach is preparing to launch a model project in cooperation with the General Directorate of Forests to plant 10 million shrubs on an area ranging between 10 and 13 thousand hectares with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint.

This project comes as part of a broader climate strategy that includes planting 420 million trees on an area of 560 thousand hectares with a budget of nearly one billion dollars. The General Directorate of Forests will conduct a feasibility study of the project to determine the appropriate types of trees and the places where they can be planted on national property.
