Algerian player Redouane Massoud Idriss was disqualified from the judo competition in the under 73 kg category due to non-compliance with the standard weight requirements.
The official statement issued today confirmed that Idriss’ weight exceeded the permitted limit, which led to his suspension from participation and the awarding of victory to his Israeli competitor Tohar Butbul without a confrontation.
Idriss’ weight, according to the official Olympic website, was 73.4 kg, which necessitated the removal of his name from the tournament schedule.
The Israeli Olympic Committee expressed its disappointment with the result of this withdrawal, stressing the importance of everyone’s commitment to Olympic laws and values.
Three years ago, the Tokyo Olympics also witnessed a confrontation between an Algerian and an Israeli player, at which time Algerian Fathi Nourine withdrew from the competition, preferring not to face an Israeli player, announcing his support for the Palestinian cause, which led to his suspension by the International Judo Federation for ten years.
It is worth noting that Egyptian boxer Yamna Ayad was also disqualified for exceeding the required weight by 700 grams, which necessitated an investigation by the Egyptian Olympic Committee.
