The Algerian Constitutional Court has issued, in an official announcement, the final list of candidates for the presidential elections scheduled for September 7.
The court president, Omar Belhadj, explained in a press conference that the list includes three main candidates: Youssef Ouchich, representing the Socialist Forces Front, Abdelmadjid Tebboune as an independent candidate, and Abdelali Hassani Cherif from the Movement for a Peaceful Society.
These names were announced after a series of closed sessions devoted to examining the electoral appeals, which numbered five.
Belhadj added that the court reviewed all the appeals according to unified and transparent standards, stressing that constitutional justice prevailed in considering each appeal.
Belhadj pointed out that after a careful review of the forms and matching them with electronic data, the process revealed some blank forms in the files of certain candidates, which prompted the court to accept four appeals in terms of form and reject them in terms of content.
The head of the court confirmed that these intensive procedures led to the announcement of the final list of candidates, arranged alphabetically, in preparation for the upcoming elections that will determine Algeria’s political path in the coming years.
The Algerian presidency announced that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided to hold the presidential elections on September 7, which means bringing them forward by 3 months from their scheduled date in December 2024. The Algerian presidency did not mention the motives for bringing forward the date of the presidential elections.
