In a rare and touching humanitarian gesture, an Algerian sanitation worker returned a huge sum of money amounting to about 30 thousand US dollars after he found it in a bag in the middle of the garbage while doing his daily work.
The story, which was reported by local media and shared with admiration by Algerians, began when Hamza Shashou, 38 years old, discovered this huge sum inside a bag while he was working cleaning the streets at night in the municipality of Briane in the state of Ghardaia, southern Algeria.
According to Shashou, he found the bag in the “Sheikh Amer” area on the road linking Briane and Al-Qarara early in the morning, and instead of keeping the large sum, he published an announcement on social media sites in cooperation with his friends, calling on the owner of the lost money to provide details about the bag in order to recover it.
Indeed, the owner of the money, a truck driver from the state of M’Sila, contacted Shashou and provided the correct information that confirmed his ownership of the sum.
This noble act by the cleaner, who despite his modest financial circumstances, preferred to return the money to its owner, was widely appreciated by Algerians, as Chachou expressed his motives by saying that what he did was the result of his upbringing and his parents’ advice that “people’s livelihood remains for people.”
The news quickly spread through the media and social networking sites, where many activists called for Chachou to be honored, indicating that he represents an example to be followed in honesty and loyalty.
Pages such as “Akhbar Ghardaia” on “Facebook” praised Chachou’s behavior, considering that this type of behavior reinforces noble values in Algerian society and provides a good example for future generations.
