Algeria regained its balance in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with an exciting victory over its host Uganda, 2-1, in the fourth round of Group Seven competitions.
Uganda started the match strongly and scored the first goal through Egyptian Zamalek striker Travis Mutyaba in the tenth minute.
Algeria was able to turn the tables in the second half, as Roma’s Italian midfielder Houssem Aouar equalized the score in the 46th minute, before Said Benrahma, the English West Ham United striker loaned to Lyon in France, scored the winning goal in the 58th minute.
With this victory, Algeria achieved its first victory under its new coach, the Swiss Vladimir Petkovic, to compensate for its loss in its first official match under his leadership when it fell to its guest Guinea 1-2 last Thursday.
Algeria strengthened its position at the top of the group by raising its score to 9 points, 3 points behind Botswana, which rose to second place temporarily by defeating Somalia 3-1 in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.
Botswana witnessed its second victory in the qualifiers, superior by goal difference to Guinea and Mozambique, who will meet later in the Moroccan city of El Jadida at the end of the round.
Somalia suffered its fourth loss in a row, which makes its mission in the qualifiers more difficult.
