The Algerian government is considering new amendments to the penal code, which aim to tighten penalties for violators of national security.
These amendments include life imprisonment for those who leak information or documents related to national security or defense for a foreign state or one of its agents.
According to press reports, the new penal code provides for life imprisonment and up to 30 years for perpetrators of national treason crimes by leaking confidential information via social media platforms for the benefit of a foreign country or its agent.
The law imposes a prison sentence of between one and 30 years for leaking confidential information or documents related to national security, defense, or the national economy to harm the interests of the state or the stability of its institutions.
The new amendments to Algeria’s penal code also emphasize the fight against the financing of terrorist groups, imposing between one and three years in prison for those who provide financial support to those registered on lists of terrorist persons and entities.
